• What does a Physiotherapy Evaluation comprise?

Your Physiotherapy Evaluation at Back Rx will be a one hour long meeting with your treating therapist. The motive of having a separate consultation session is to meticulously evaluate the problem, which is key to successful treatment. A detailed discussion of your problem is followed by a physical examination. An analysis of how much you can move, which movements produce pain and which help relieve it is carried out, to obtain a mechanical understanding of your problem. Strength testing of various muscle groups, assessment of sensations back down, reflex testing, balance evaluation- are conducted when needed. Any associated problems e.g. knee pain, shoulder pain will also be evaluated and given attention.

At the end of the evaluation your therapist will explain to you what they think the problem is, what treatment strategy they would like to adopt and approximately how long they think you would take to recover. All your queries and concerns will be answered empathetically.

If you have occasional, almost negligible pain or no pain but want to just understand how your back works and what you can do to protect it, you could get yourself consulted. Our therapists will be more than happy to educate you about prevention of back problems specific to your lifestyle.

• What does a Physiotherapy treatment session consist of?

A treatment session is scheduled prior as per convenience and will take about 40 mins to 1hour. Specific exercises are taught to you keeping your evaluation report in mind. Soft tissue and manual treatments may be conducted by the therapist if necessary. Pain relief modalities are used if acute severe pain is bothersome or as an adjunct in sub-acute & chronic cases. An active exercise based approach with manual treatments is used much more than machines, to aid rapid natural recovery and constant re-evaluation of the problem over sessions is conducted to help fine-tune treatment strategies used. Your Physical Therapist will ensure you are educated well about what your problem is and an on-going discussion about this over sessions equips you with essential prevention tips for the long run.

Your therapist will be happy to discuss your problem with your Consulting Doctor/ Orthopaedic surgeon/ Spine Surgeon as and when needed.

• How many sessions would you need?

There is no fixed magic number that we could tell you about. Number of sessions you will need is very specific to your problem, how long it’s been, how compliant you are and how your body responds to treatment. It could take just 2 or it could take 20 - this will be discussed with you in your evaluation session when a baseline of your problem has been established.
